It's part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2023-25. In fact, the penultimate series of the 2023-25 cycle but with minimal context: they are the two worst performing teams -- Pakistan eighth and the Windies ninth; the finalists have already been confirmed -- holders Australia who tended India's final run with Border-Gavaskar Trophy win, up against South Africa. The Aussies' tour of Sri Lanka, also a two-match series will conclude the cycle. The Warne-Muralitharan Trophy series starts on January 29.

Expectedly, both the teams have made changes galore in their respective squads. Pakistan, who will also host a divided ICC Champions Trophy starting February 19, dropped seven from the squad that just toured South Africa for a two-Test series.

The West Indies are chasing a first Test win in Pakistan since November 1990 and will rely on old warhorse Kemar Roach to do the damage on a Multan surface which has been spin-friendly, historically. They are without pacers, Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph.

That said, Kraigg Brathwaite has spin reinforcement in slow left-armer Gudakesh Motie. The visitors have also given wicketkeeper-batter Amir Jangoo a maiden Test call-up. The 27-year-old scored an unbeaten century in his debut international match, 104 not out against Bangladesh in the 3rd ODI at Basseterre.

The visitors' three-day warm-up fixture against Pakistan A, from January 10 to 13, at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium has ended in a draw.

The second Test, at the same venue, starts on January 25. Pakistan will then play an ODI tri-series with New Zealand and South Africa.
